What can make a drug rehab program successful?

By editor | February 27, 2009

A simple intervention, a few weeks in a lavish facility and keeping the person away from the hint of slipping back to their addiction. This is all that it takes right? Just put them into a drug treatment center and they will make it through without ever having to worry about a relapse again right? Wrong. There is more to drug rehab than just sitting back and watching the events unfold.

Any successful program will typically begin with a strong intervention. This intervention is not meant to just bring to light what the person is doing to themselves, but also show them what they have been doing to those around them. This will many times cause an emotional breakdown that will help get them in the right frame of mind for the tough and arduous process that lies ahead of them. It may not be easy, but the mind will be open to everything around them. Drug detox will then follow, and the type of detox will depend on the type of drug that was being used. Many drugs such as heroin will have a very adverse affect on the body as the person goes through withdrawal. This sometimes painful part of the rehab will cause someone to typically have second thoughts on if they are in the right place, but if they are in the right facility the trained staff around them will then push them forward. While many feel that once the detox is complete the drug rehab program is done, this is still just another step in getting the patient to the next level.

Once a person gets beyond detox, they must then get their body back into good physical condition. The facility will help the patient get back into shape by putting good nutrition back into their body to take the place of the bad things that once inundated their metabolism.

A person will then be joined with a well trained staff of physicians and other medical professionals who have spent their entire careers helping those who are faced with difficult addictions. While this may include alcohol addiction, many aspects of the treatment are the same. Being around others who have beaten their addiction, then have returned to help others get to a better point in their life; is very positive reinforcement for those who may be having second thoughts on where they should be. Coupled with the urge to make a person once again better, they will also begin to build a person’s self esteem and disciple once again.

As you can see, bringing a person back to a comfortable stage of “humanness” and showing them a part of what they can be once again is what drug rehab and recovery is all about. It can be a long, painful and stressful process, yet many would not argue that in the end that having a normal life without an addiction is well worth it in the long run.
